Pictured transiting through Burrard Inlet, the 6,200-ton icebreaker John A. Macdonald was halfway through her circumnavigation of North America after successfully transiting the Northwest Passage.
That same month, the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard presented a Unit Commendation to the Macdonald for “extremely meritorious service rendered to the U.S. Coast Guard by the Macdonald between September 23rd and October 8th in assisting the icebreaker Northwind.”
